2 2 Chronicles 3:15–17 In front of the temple he made two pillars, which together were thirty-five cubits high, each with a capital on top measuring five cubits. He made interwoven chains and put them on top of the pillars. He made a hundred pomegranates and fastened them into the chainwork. Then he set up the pillars in front of the temple, one on the south and one on the north. The pillar on the south he named Jachin, and the pillar on the north he named Boaz.

2 Chronicles 4:12 Summary

[This verse describes the beautiful details of the temple, including two pillars with decorative capitals, networks, and pomegranates. The temple was a special place where God's people worshiped and connected with Him (1 Kings 8:1-11, Psalm 84:1-4). Just like the Israelites, we can create a sense of beauty and reverence in our worship by paying attention to detail and striving for excellence (1 Chronicles 28:11-19, Colossians 3:23-24). By doing so, we can create a space where people can encounter God's presence and glory (2 Chronicles 5:13-14, Ezekiel 40:1-4).]

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the two pillars mentioned in 2 Chronicles 4:12?

The two pillars are likely the same ones mentioned in 1 Kings 7:15-22, which were named Jachin and Boaz, symbolizing the strength and beauty of God's temple (1 Kings 7:21, 2 Chronicles 3:17).

What is the significance of the bowl-shaped capitals?

The bowl-shaped capitals were decorative elements that added beauty to the pillars, much like the decorative elements in the tabernacle (Exodus 25:31-40), and they also held the networks and pomegranates, which had symbolic meanings (2 Chronicles 4:13).

What do the networks and pomegranates represent?

The networks and pomegranates may represent the abundance and fruitfulness of God's people, much like the fruitfulness of the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 8:7-10), and the many seeds in a pomegranate may symbolize the many descendants of God's people (Genesis 13:16, 15:5).

How do these details relate to our worship today?

These details remind us that our worship should be characterized by beauty, order, and attention to detail, just like the temple (1 Chronicles 28:11-19, Psalm 96:9), and that we should strive to create a sense of awe and reverence in our worship spaces (2 Chronicles 5:13-14, Ezekiel 40:1-4).

Reflection Questions

  1. What does the attention to detail in the construction of the temple reveal about God's character and expectations for our worship?
  2. How can I apply the principles of beauty, order, and attention to detail in my own life and worship?
  3. What symbolic meanings can be derived from the pillars, capitals, networks, and pomegranates, and how can I apply these to my own spiritual journey?
  4. In what ways can I create a sense of awe and reverence in my personal worship and in my community's worship gatherings?

The word “two” (shtayim) is feminine, agreeing with “globes and capitals,” which are also feminine; whereas “pillars” is a masculine term. Wreaths.—Heb., sĕ ?bâkhôth, lattices. (Comp. 2 Kings 1:2.) The Authorised version of 1 Kings 7:41 gives “network,” but the Hebrew word is the same as here.
