Soon after that, Joab and some of David’s other soldiers returned to Hebron after raiding one of their enemies’ villages, bringing with them a lot of things that they had captured. But Abner was not there at Hebron, because David had sent him safely home.

In the absence of taxes and regular pay, it was the only means of supporting an army. Comp. David’s practice at Ziklag (1 Samuel 27:8 ff.).

22. From pursuing a troop — Literally, from the troop; that is, a troop or band of select warriors that had been out fighting with hostile tribes of the desert.
