Exodus 26:23 Summary

Exodus 26:23 talks about two special frames that were made for the back corners of the tabernacle, which was a special tent where God would meet with the Israelites. These frames were important because they helped hold the tabernacle together and made it strong, like how Jesus Christ is the cornerstone that holds the church together (Ephesians 2:20). The attention to detail in this verse shows us that God cares about every aspect of our lives and wants us to build our lives on a strong foundation, just like the tabernacle (Matthew 7:24-25). By following God's instructions and being careful in our work, we can build something that is pleasing to Him and brings glory to His name.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of the two frames for the back corners of the tabernacle in Exodus 26:23?

The two frames for the back corners of the tabernacle are significant because they provide additional structural support to the tabernacle, ensuring its stability and integrity, as seen in Exodus 26:24 where they are coupled together from bottom to top and fitted into a single ring.

How do the frames in Exodus 26:23 relate to the overall design of the tabernacle?

The frames in Exodus 26:23 are part of the larger design of the tabernacle, which is described in detail in Exodus 26, and their specific placement and construction are crucial to the tabernacle's ability to fulfill its purpose as a dwelling place for God among the Israelites, as stated in Exodus 25:8.

What can we learn about God's character from the attention to detail in Exodus 26:23?

The attention to detail in Exodus 26:23, such as the specific instructions for the frames and their construction, reveals God's character as a God of order and precision, who values beauty and functionality, as seen in other passages like Psalm 19:1 and Genesis 1:31.

How does the description of the tabernacle's construction in Exodus 26:23 relate to the New Testament concept of the church as a spiritual temple?

The description of the tabernacle's construction in Exodus 26:23, with its emphasis on precise instructions and careful craftsmanship, can be seen as a foreshadowing of the New Testament concept of the church as a spiritual temple, built on the foundation of Jesus Christ, as described in Ephesians 2:20-22 and 1 Corinthians 3:16-17.

Reflection Questions

  1. What does the attention to detail in Exodus 26:23 reveal about God's character and His relationship with His people?
  2. How can I apply the principles of careful planning and precise execution seen in Exodus 26:23 to my own life and ministry?
  3. What does the concept of the tabernacle as a dwelling place for God among the Israelites teach me about God's desire to be present with His people?
  4. In what ways can I, like the Israelites, contribute to the building of God's spiritual temple, the church, through my own gifts and talents?

Gill's Exposition on Exodus 26:23

And two boards shalt thou make for the corners of the tabernacle in the two sides. For the northwest and southwest corners, in the north and south sides; concerning which Dr.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Exodus 26:23

And thou shalt make boards for the tabernacle of shittim wood standing up. Boards ... of shittim wood standing up.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Exodus 26:23

Which were of another fashion than the former, as may be gathered both from the distinct nomination and use of them, and from the laws of building. And whereas the rest were but single boards, these were double, for greater strength and conveniency of joining them together.

Ellicott's Commentary on Exodus 26:23

XXVI. THE .(1-37) The sacred tent which was to form the “House of God,” or temple, for Israel during the continuance of the people in the wilderness, and which in point of fact served them for a national sanctuary until the construction of the first temple by Solomon, is described in this chapter with a minuteness which leaves little to be desired. It is called ham-mishkân, “the dwelling,” and ha-’ohel, “the tent” (Exodus 26:36)—the former from its purpose, as being the place where God “dwelt” in a peculiar manner (Exodus 25:22); the latter from its shape and general construction, which resembled those of other tents of the period. The necessary foundation was a framework of wood. This consisted of five “pillars,” or tent-poles, in front (Exodus 26:37), graduated in height to suit the slope of the roof, and doubtless five similar ones at the back, though these are not mentioned. A ridge-pole must have connected the two central tent-poles, and over this ridge-pole the covering of the tent, which was of goats’-hair (Exodus 26:7), was no doubt strained in the ordinary way by means of cords and “pins,” or tent-pegs (Exodus 35:18). Thus an oblong square space was roofed over, which seems to have been sixty feet long by thirty broad. Within this “tent” (‘ohel) was placed the “dwelling” (mishkân). The “dwelling” was a space forty-five feet long by fifteen broad, enclosed on three sides by walls of boards (Exodus 26:18-25), and opening in front into a sort of porch formed by the projection of the “tent” beyond the “dwelling.” Towards the open air this porch was closed, wholly or partially, by a curtain (Exodus 26:36). The “dwelling” was roofed over by another “curtain,” or “hanging,” of bright colours and rich materials (Exodus 26:1-6). It was divided into two portions, called respectively “the Holy Place,” and “the Holy of Holies”—the former towards the porch, the latter away from it. These two places were separated by a “vail” hung upon four pillars (Exodus 26:31-32). Their relative size is uncertain; but it may be suspected that the Holy of Holies was the smaller of the two, and conjectured that the proportion was as one to two, the Holy of Holies being a square of fifteen feet, and the Holy Place an oblong, thirty feet long by fifteen. The whole structure was placed within an area called “the Court of the Tabernacle,” which is described in the next chapter.

Cambridge Bible on Exodus 26:23

18–25. The number of frames for each side of the Dwelling, and the arrangements for holding them firmly in their place.

Whedon's Commentary on Exodus 26:23

23-25. Two boards… for the corners — The exact form and purpose of these boards it seems impossible to determine with absolute certainty. They were to be somehow coupled together at base and top unto one ring.
