Exodus 27:10 Summary

The verse Exodus 27:10 describes the construction of the tabernacle's courtyard, with twenty posts and twenty bronze bases, and silver hooks and bands on the posts. This structure was important for the Israelites' worship and separation from the world, as seen in Leviticus 10:10. Just as the tabernacle had a specific design and purpose, our lives as believers should also be built with care and attention to God's commands, as stated in Matthew 7:24-27 (see also Exodus 19:5). By following God's instructions and living a life of obedience, we can become a spiritual temple, a dwelling place for God, as described in 1 Corinthians 3:16-17.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the purpose of the twenty posts and twenty bronze bases in Exodus 27:10?

The twenty posts and twenty bronze bases in Exodus 27:10 were part of the structure for the curtains that surrounded the tabernacle, providing a framework for the courtyard as described in Exodus 27:9-12, and symbolizing the separation between the holy and the common, as seen in Leviticus 10:10.

Why were silver hooks and bands used on the posts in Exodus 27:10?

The use of silver hooks and bands on the posts in Exodus 27:10 signified the value and importance of the tabernacle and its furnishings, as silver was a precious metal, and it also represented the unity and harmony of the Israelites, as they were all equal before God, as stated in Exodus 19:6.

How does the construction of the tabernacle, including the details in Exodus 27:10, relate to the New Testament?

The construction of the tabernacle, including the details in Exodus 27:10, foreshadows the coming of Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate tabernacle, as stated in John 1:14, and the heavenly temple, as described in Revelation 21:22-23.

What can we learn from the precise instructions given in Exodus 27:10 about the construction of the tabernacle?

The precise instructions given in Exodus 27:10 about the construction of the tabernacle teach us about the importance of obedience to God's commands, as seen in Exodus 19:5, and the value of attention to detail in our service to Him, as emphasized in Colossians 3:23-24.

Reflection Questions

  1. As I reflect on the twenty posts and twenty bronze bases in Exodus 27:10, what does this reveal to me about God's desire for order and structure in my life?
  2. How can I apply the principle of separation between the holy and the common, as symbolized by the tabernacle's courtyard, to my own life and worship?
  3. What does the use of precious materials, such as silver, in the construction of the tabernacle teach me about the value God places on His people and our service to Him?
  4. In what ways can I, like the Israelites, contribute to the building of God's spiritual temple, as described in 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, and what role do I play in the larger community of believers?

Gill's Exposition on Exodus 27:10

And the twenty pillars thereof and their twenty sockets [shall be of brass],.... On these pillars the hangings, rails, or curtains were set, and they were for one side, the south side, in number

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Exodus 27:10

And the twenty pillars thereof and their twenty sockets shall be of brass; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets shall be of silver. No JFB commentary on these verses.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Exodus 27:10

On the twenty pillars the hangings were fastened by the hooks here mentioned. Their twenty sockets, or, bases, upon which the pillars stood. Their fillets, or, hoops, which encompassed the pillars at the top, being placed there, as it seems, for ornament only.

Trapp's Commentary on Exodus 27:10

Exodus 27:10 And the twenty pillars thereof and their twenty sockets [shall be of] brass; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets [shall be of] silver.Ver. 10. And the twenty pillars.] In allusion whereunto, the Church is called the "pillar and stay of truth."

Ellicott's Commentary on Exodus 27:10

(10) And the twenty pillars thereof . . . —Heb., and its pillars, twenty (in number), and their bases, also twenty (shall be) of bronze. Kalisch says that the pillars of the court were “of wood, not plated with metal” (Comment., p. 371); but the present passage, and also Exodus 38:10, rightly translated, contradict this view. The hooks of the pillars.—Comp. Exodus 26:37. As the pillars were for the support of the “hangings,” they required “hooks,” whereto the “hangings” might be attached. Their fillets.—Rather, their connecting-rods. The pillars of the court were to be united by rods, which would help to support the “hangings.”

Cambridge Bible on Exodus 27:10

10. sockets] properly bases: see on Exodus 26:19. brass] copper or bronze, as always. See also on Exodus 25:3. the hooks) for attaching the hangings to. fillets) i.e. bands, or binding-rings (the root in Aram, signifies to bind), surrounding the pillars, probably at the base of the capitals (Exodus 38:17): so Di., Kenn. The Heb. word has also been understood to mean connecting-rods, joining the tops of the pillars, to which the hangings were attached: Exodus 38:19, however, seems to shew that the ḥ ?ǎ ?shuḳ ?im were integral parts of the pillars, and the Heb. of Exodus 27:17 (= Exodus 38:17) can hardly mean ‘connected by silver rods.’ ‘Fillet’ (lit. a little thread, from Lat. filum, Fr. fil, dimin. filet) is a word better known formerly than it is now (except in connexion with food), meaning a headband, esp. a ribbon, but also used for any narrow strip of binding material (DB. s.v.), or for strips of metal (Murray, Eng. Dict. s.v.).

Whedon's Commentary on Exodus 27:10

10, 11. Twenty pillars — Thus allowing for five cubits (7.5 feet) between each pillar. These pillars were connected by means of hooks and fillets of silver.
