Joshua 15:58 Summary

Joshua 15:58 lists the cities of Halhul, Beth-zur, and Gedor, which were given to the tribe of Judah as part of their inheritance. This verse reminds us that God is a God of detail and care, who provides for His people and fulfills His promises, as seen in Joshua 21:43-45. Just as these cities were important to the tribe of Judah, we can trust that God has a plan and purpose for our own lives, and that He will provide for us, as promised in Jeremiah 29:11 and Matthew 6:33. By trusting in God's sovereignty and provision, we can live with confidence and hope, knowing that He is always with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of the cities listed in Joshua 15:58?

The cities listed in Joshua 15:58, such as Halhul, Beth-zur, and Gedor, were part of the allotment given to the tribe of Judah, as described in Joshua 15. These cities held strategic and spiritual importance, as seen in other scriptures like 1 Samuel 30:14 and 2 Chronicles 11:7.

Why are these specific cities mentioned in the Bible?

The Bible mentions these cities to provide a record of the inheritance given to the tribe of Judah, as promised by God in Genesis 49:10 and confirmed in Joshua 14:1-5. This serves as a reminder of God's faithfulness to His people.

What can we learn from the geography and layout of these cities?

The geography and layout of these cities, as mentioned in Joshua 15:58, demonstrate the Lord's provision and care for His people, as seen in Deuteronomy 8:7-10 and Jeremiah 2:7. This teaches us to trust in God's sovereignty and provision in our own lives.

How do these cities relate to the overall narrative of Joshua 15?

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Joshua 15:58

Verse 58. Gedor] See Clarke on Joshua 12:13. In this place the Alexandrian MS. of the Septuagint and the Codex Vaticanus add the eleven following towns: Theca, and Ephratha, (that is, Bethlehem,) and Phagor, and Etan, and Kulon, and Tatam, and Thebes, and Karam, and Galam, and Thether, and Manocho; eleven cities and their villages. St. Jerome, on Micah 5:1, mentions them, so that we find they were in the copies he used. Dr. Kennicott contends that they should be restored to the text, and accounts thus for their omission: "The same word וחצרויהן vechatsreyhen, and their villages. occurring immediately before this passage and at the end of it, the transcriber's eye passed from one to the other by mistake. A similar accident has caused the omission of two whole verses, the 35th and 36th of Jos. 21." See the note there. See Clarke on Joshua 21:35; "Joshua 21:36".
