Joshua 5:14 Summary
[This verse shows us that Joshua met a powerful and divine Commander who was leading God's army. The Commander told Joshua that He had come to lead the Israelites to victory, and Joshua responded with reverence and humility, similar to how we should respond to God's presence in our lives (as seen in Psalm 95:6-7). By falling facedown, Joshua acknowledged God's authority and power, and we can learn from his example by surrendering to God's leadership in our own lives. As we read this verse, we are reminded that God is always with us and wants to lead us to victory, just as He did with the Israelites (as promised in Deuteronomy 31:6-8).]
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the Commander of the Lord's army in Joshua 5:14?
The Commander of the Lord's army is likely a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Christ, as seen in other passages such as Genesis 18:1-33 and Exodus 23:20-23, where God appears in human form to interact with His people.
Why did Joshua fall facedown in reverence when he met the Commander?
Joshua fell facedown in reverence because he recognized the divine authority and power of the Commander, similar to how the prophet Isaiah responded when he saw the Lord sitting on a throne in Isaiah 6:1-5.
What does it mean for the Commander to say 'I have now come as Commander of the Lord's army'?
The Commander's statement indicates that He has come to lead the armies of Israel to victory, as promised in Deuteronomy 20:4, and to fulfill God's covenant promises to His people.
How does this verse relate to the rest of the book of Joshua?
This verse marks a turning point in the book of Joshua, as it signals the beginning of the conquest of Canaan and the fulfillment of God's promises to the Israelites, as seen in Joshua 1:1-9 and Joshua 21:43-45.
