Nehemiah 10:2 Summary

[This verse lists the names of some of the leaders who agreed to follow God's laws and commands, as part of a larger covenant with God, similar to the one in Deuteronomy 29:12-15. By sealing the document, they were making a public promise to obey God and follow His ways. This is similar to how we might sign a contract or make a promise to someone today. Just like these leaders, we can also make a commitment to follow God and live according to His Word, as seen in Psalm 119:105-112 where the psalmist delights in God's Word and commits to following it.]

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the individuals listed in Nehemiah 10:2?

The individuals listed in Nehemiah 10:2, such as Seraiah, Azariah, and Jeremiah, are likely prominent leaders or priests in the community who have sealed the document, as mentioned in Nehemiah 10:1, similar to how leaders were chosen in Exodus 18:21 to help Moses lead the people.

What is the significance of sealing a document in the Bible?

Sealing a document in the Bible, as seen in Nehemiah 10:1-2, signified a formal agreement or covenant, similar to the seals used in Esther 8:8 to authenticate royal decrees, and serves as a public declaration of one's commitment to the terms of the document, as seen in Deuteronomy 29:12-15 where the people of Israel committed to the covenant with God.

How does this verse relate to the rest of the chapter?

This verse is part of a larger list of individuals who have sealed the document, as mentioned in Nehemiah 10:1-27, and it highlights the collective commitment of the community to the covenant they have made with God, similar to the covenant renewal in 2 Chronicles 34:29-33 where the king and people of Judah renewed their covenant with God.

What can we learn from the names listed in this verse?

The names listed in Nehemiah 10:2, such as Seraiah, Azariah, and Jeremiah, remind us that God works through individuals to accomplish His purposes, as seen in Romans 16:3-16 where Paul greets various individuals who have contributed to the spread of the Gospel, and that each person has a unique role to play in the story of God's people, as seen in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 where Paul explains that each member of the body of Christ has a vital function.

Reflection Questions

  1. What does it mean for me to 'seal' my commitment to God, and how can I demonstrate my devotion to Him in my daily life?
  2. How can I, like the individuals listed in this verse, use my position or influence to promote the values and principles of God's kingdom?
  3. In what ways can I work together with others in my community to accomplish God's purposes, just as the leaders and people of Israel did in Nehemiah 10?
  4. What are some ways that I can, like Seraiah, Azariah, and Jeremiah, be a faithful and courageous leader in my own sphere of influence?

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Nehemiah 10:2

Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah, No JFB commentary on these verses.

Ellicott's Commentary on Nehemiah 10:2

(2) Seraiah.—The family name of the high-priestly house to which Ezra and Eliashib belonged, one of whom—probably Ezra—affixed its seal.

Barnes' Notes on Nehemiah 10:2

The names are not personal, but designate families. The seal of the high-priestly house of Seraiah was probably appended either by Ezra or Eliashib, both of whom belonged to it.

Whedon's Commentary on Nehemiah 10:2

2. Seraiah is called in Nehemiah 11:11, “the ruler of the house of God,” and Keil supposes he signed the document in place of the high priest. Azariah is probably a clerical error, or corruption of Ezra.
