Nehemiah 7:43 Summary

[This verse is about a group of special servants called Levites, who helped the priests and took care of the temple. There were 74 of them from the family of Jeshua, and they were part of the bigger group of Israelites returning home after being away for a long time (as seen in Ezra 1:5). Just like the Levites, we can all be set apart to serve the Lord and help others, even if it's in small ways (Romans 12:1-2). The fact that there were only 74 Levites from this family shows that even the people who served the Lord faced challenges and hardships, but they were still important to God's plan (Psalm 138:8).]

Frequently Asked Questions

Who were the Levites and what was their role in the community?

The Levites were a tribe of Israelites set apart for serving the Lord and assisting the priests, as seen in Numbers 3:6-10 and Ezekiel 44:10-16. In Nehemiah 7:43, we see a specific group of Levites, the descendants of Jeshua, who were part of the community returning from exile.

What is the significance of the number 74 in this verse?

The number 74 likely represents the total count of male Levites from the family of Jeshua who returned from exile, as part of the larger census in Nehemiah 7. This number is significant because it shows that even the Levites, who were responsible for serving the Lord, were not exempt from the challenges and hardships of the exile.

How does this verse relate to the overall theme of Nehemiah?

Nehemiah 7:43 is part of a larger passage that emphasizes the importance of community and restoration after the exile. Just as the Levites were being restored to their rightful place, the entire community was being rebuilt and renewed, as seen in Nehemiah 2:17-18 and Ezra 1:5.

What can we learn from the genealogy in this verse?

The genealogy in Nehemiah 7:43 highlights the importance of family and heritage in the biblical narrative. It also shows how God works through specific families and individuals to accomplish His purposes, as seen in Romans 11:28 and Galatians 3:29.

Reflection Questions

  1. What does this verse reveal about God's heart for His people, particularly those who serve Him in special roles?
  2. How does the small number of Levites in this verse compare to the larger numbers of other groups, and what might this say about God's priorities?
  3. In what ways can I, like the Levites, be set apart for serving the Lord and assisting others in my community?
  4. What are some ways that I can be part of rebuilding and renewing my own community, just as the Israelites were rebuilding Jerusalem?
  5. How can I balance my desire to serve the Lord with the challenges and hardships that inevitably come with that service?

Ellicott's Commentary on Nehemiah 7:43

(5-73) The genealogical reckoning of the people, as the first step towards increasing the population of the metropolis, is determined on, not without express Divine suggestion; the allusion to this inspiration from God, is, as in Nehemiah 2:12, very emphatic. The original register of Zerubbabelis found and copied. The express language of both Ezra and Nehemiah makes it plain that this is no other than the list of those who came up with Zerubbabel and Joshua after the decree of Cyrus, in B.C. 538. Nehemiah’s own census follows, in Nehemiah 11. The exposition, especially as compared with Ezra 2, has been given on that chapter.
