Nehemiah 7:59 Summary

Nehemiah 7:59 lists the descendants of several families, including Shephatiah, Hattil, Pochereth-hazzebaim, and Amon, who were part of the community that returned from exile to Jerusalem. This verse shows that God cares about all people, regardless of their background or social status, and wants them to be part of His community, as seen in (Galatians 3:28) and (Revelation 7:9-10). The listing of these families also highlights the importance of family and heritage in our lives, and encourages us to be faithful in our own responsibilities and roles, as exhorted in (Colossians 3:23-24). By studying this verse, we can learn more about God's faithfulness and redemption of His people, and be inspired to serve Him and others, as seen in (Nehemiah 3:1-32) and (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of listing the descendants of various families in Nehemiah 7:59?

The listing of these families is important for establishing the genealogy and heritage of the post-exilic community, as seen in Ezra 2:59 and Nehemiah 7:61, which helps to verify their Jewish roots and right to return to Jerusalem.

Who were the descendants of Shephatiah, Hattil, Pochereth-hazzebaim, and Amon?

The Bible does not provide detailed information about these specific families, but their inclusion in the list suggests they were part of the community that returned from exile, as mentioned in Nehemiah 7:6-73, and were likely servants or temple workers, similar to those mentioned in Nehemiah 7:57-60.

Why is it important to know about the temple servants and descendants of the servants of Solomon?

Understanding the roles and families of the temple servants and descendants of Solomon's servants, as mentioned in Nehemiah 7:57-60 and Ezra 2:43-58, helps to appreciate the organization and hierarchy of the post-exilic community, and how they worked together to rebuild the temple and restore worship, as seen in Ezra 3:8-13 and Nehemiah 12:1-47.

How does this verse relate to the broader story of the Israelites' return from exile?

Nehemiah 7:59 is part of the larger narrative of the Israelites' return from Babylonian exile, as prophesied in Deuteronomy 30:1-10 and Jeremiah 29:10-14, and fulfilled in Ezra 1:1-4 and Nehemiah 1:1-11, which ultimately points to God's faithfulness and redemption of His people, as seen in Isaiah 43:1-7 and Romans 11:25-32.

Reflection Questions

  1. What can we learn from the faithful recording of genealogies in the Bible, such as in Nehemiah 7:59, about the importance of family and heritage in our own lives?
  2. How does the inclusion of various families in the list, like those in Nehemiah 7:59, demonstrate God's care and concern for all people, regardless of their background or social status, as seen in Galatians 3:28 and Revelation 7:9-10?
  3. What role do you think the descendants of Shephatiah, Hattil, Pochereth-hazzebaim, and Amon played in the rebuilding of the temple and the restoration of worship in Jerusalem, and what can we learn from their example about serving God and others, as seen in Nehemiah 3:1-32 and Hebrews 10:24-25?
  4. How does the study of this verse and its context encourage you to be faithful in your own responsibilities and roles, whether in your family, church, or community, as exhorted in Colossians 3:23-24 and 2 Timothy 2:15?

Ellicott's Commentary on Nehemiah 7:59

(5-73) The genealogical reckoning of the people, as the first step towards increasing the population of the metropolis, is determined on, not without express Divine suggestion; the allusion to this inspiration from God, is, as in Nehemiah 2:12, very emphatic. The original register of Zerubbabelis found and copied. The express language of both Ezra and Nehemiah makes it plain that this is no other than the list of those who came up with Zerubbabel and Joshua after the decree of Cyrus, in B.C. 538. Nehemiah’s own census follows, in Nehemiah 11. The exposition, especially as compared with Ezra 2, has been given on that chapter.
