Context — Seventy Elders Anointed
16Then the LORD said to Moses, “Bring Me seventy of the elders of Israel known to you as leaders and officers of the people. Bring them to the Tent of Meeting and have them stand there with you.
17And I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put that Spirit on them. They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it by yourself. 18And say to the people: Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you will eat meat, because you have cried out in the hearing of the LORD, saying: ‘Who will feed us meat? For we were better off in Egypt!’ Therefore the LORD will give you meat, and you will eat.Cross References

Numbers 11:16 Summary
In Numbers 11:16, God tells Moses to bring seventy elders to the Tent of Meeting so they can help him with the burden of leading the people. This shows that God wants us to work together and support each other, rather than trying to do everything on our own (as seen in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12). Moses was feeling overwhelmed, but God provided a solution by sharing the leadership with others, which is also seen in Acts 6:1-7, where the apostles appointed deacons to help with the practical needs of the church. This reminds us that we don't have to carry our burdens alone, and that God provides us with people and resources to help us, as promised in Psalm 55:22 and Matthew 11:28-30.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did God tell Moses to bring seventy elders to the Tent of Meeting?
God instructed Moses to bring seventy elders to the Tent of Meeting because He wanted to share the burden of leadership with them, as Moses was feeling overwhelmed, as seen in Numbers 11:14. This act of delegation is also seen in Exodus 18:13-27, where Jethro advised Moses to appoint leaders to help him govern the people.
What was the purpose of having the elders stand with Moses at the Tent of Meeting?
The purpose of having the elders stand with Moses at the Tent of Meeting was for them to receive a portion of the Spirit that was on Moses, as stated in Numbers 11:17, and to be commissioned as leaders to help Moses bear the burden of the people, similar to how the apostles were commissioned in Acts 1:8.
How does this verse relate to the concept of leadership in the Bible?
This verse highlights the importance of shared leadership and delegation, as seen in Numbers 11:16-17, where God shares the burden of leadership with the seventy elders. This concept is also seen in 1 Corinthians 12:28, where the Bible talks about different gifts and roles within the church, and in Matthew 10:1-4, where Jesus appoints twelve apostles to help Him in His ministry.
What can we learn from Moses' situation in this verse?
We can learn from Moses' situation that leadership is not a one-person job, and that it's okay to ask for help, as Moses did in Numbers 11:14-15. This is also seen in Psalm 121:1-2, where the Bible reminds us that our help comes from the Lord, and in Matthew 11:28-30, where Jesus invites us to come to Him for rest and help with our burdens.

- What does it mean to 'stand with' someone in a spiritual sense, and how can I stand with my brothers and sisters in Christ?
- In what ways can I, like Moses, be humble and recognize my need for help and support from others?
- How can I, like the Israelites, be mindful of my complaints and instead focus on the provision and care of God, as seen in Numbers 11:18-20?
