Numbers 13:13 Summary

This verse, Numbers 13:13, tells us about a man named Sethur, who was the son of Michael and a leader from the tribe of Asher. God chose him, along with other leaders, to spy out the land of Canaan and report back to Moses and the people, as seen in Numbers 13:1-2. This was an important task, as it would help the Israelites prepare to enter the Promised Land, just like God had promised them (Genesis 12:7, Exodus 3:8). By obeying God's call, Sethur son of Michael showed us the importance of trusting and following God's plan for our lives, even when we don't fully understand what's happening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who was Sethur son of Michael in the Bible?

Sethur son of Michael was a leader from the tribe of Asher, chosen by God to spy out the land of Canaan, as recorded in Numbers 13:13 and also mentioned in the list of spies in Numbers 13:4-15, which includes other leaders like Gaddi son of Susi from the tribe of Manasseh and Ammiel son of Gemalli from the tribe of Dan.

What was the significance of the tribe of Asher in the Bible?

The tribe of Asher was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, and they played an important role in the history of God's people, as seen in Deuteronomy 33:24, where Moses blessed the tribe of Asher, saying they would be blessed with abundant oil and iron, and also in Genesis 30:13, where Asher's mother, Zilpah, named him Asher, meaning happy or blessed.

Why did God choose these specific leaders to spy out the land of Canaan?

God chose these leaders, including Sethur son of Michael, because they were representatives of their respective tribes, and God wanted to give them a firsthand look at the Promised Land, as seen in Numbers 13:1-2, where God instructs Moses to send out the spies, and also in Deuteronomy 1:22-23, where Moses explains that the idea to send out spies came from the people, but God still used it for His purposes.

What can we learn from the example of Sethur son of Michael in the Bible?

We can learn the importance of faithfulness and obedience to God's call, just like Sethur son of Michael, who was chosen to serve God in a specific role, as seen in Numbers 13:13, and we can also learn from the example of other leaders in the Bible, such as Joshua, who trusted God and led the people into the Promised Land, as seen in Joshua 1:1-9.

And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur. No JFB commentary on these verses.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Numbers 13:13

Verse 13. Sethur, the son of Michael.] It would have been strange had the numerous searches after the explanation of the mystical number 666, Revelation 13:18; Revelation 17:5, met with nothing to their purpose in the name of this son of Michael. סתור Sethur, from סתר sathar, to hide or conceal, signifies hidden or mysterious, and includes in it the numerical letters of the No. 666: ס60, + ת400, + ו6, + ר200, = 666. But of what utility can such expositions be to any subject of history or theology?
