Context — Purification of the Unclean
18Then a man who is ceremonially clean is to take some hyssop, dip it in the water, and sprinkle the tent, all the furnishings, and the people who were there. He is also to sprinkle the one who touched a bone, a grave, or a person who has died or been slain.
19The man who is ceremonially clean is to sprinkle the unclean person on the third day and on the seventh day. After he purifies the unclean person on the seventh day, the one being cleansed must wash his clothes and bathe in water, and that evening he will be clean. 20But if a person who is unclean does not purify himself, he will be cut off from the assembly, because he has defiled the sanctuary of the LORD. The water of purification has not been sprinkled on him; he is unclean.Cross References

Numbers 19:18 Summary
[This verse is about how to make things clean after someone has come into contact with something dead or unclean. A special person, who is already clean, takes some hyssop, dips it in water, and sprinkles it on the people and things that need to be cleaned. This is like what happens in Psalm 51:7, where God cleanses us from our sins. The purpose is to make everything clean and pure again, so that the people can worship and live together without any uncleanness, as seen in Leviticus 15:31.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the significance of the hyssop used in Numbers 19:18?
The hyssop was a symbol of purification and cleansing, as seen in Psalm 51:7, where it is used to cleanse from sin, and in Exodus 12:22, where it is used to apply the blood of the Passover lamb to the doorposts.
Why was it necessary for a ceremonially clean person to sprinkle the water in Numbers 19:18?
This was to ensure that the purification ritual was performed by someone who was ritually pure, as required in Numbers 19:18, and to prevent the spread of uncleanness, as warned in Numbers 19:20.
What is the purpose of sprinkling the people and the tent in Numbers 19:18?
The purpose was to purify and cleanse them from any defilement caused by contact with death or uncleanness, as stated in Numbers 19:16, and to restore their ritual purity, as required for worship and community life, as seen in Leviticus 15:31.
How does the ritual in Numbers 19:18 relate to the broader theme of purification in the Bible?
The ritual in Numbers 19:18 is part of a larger theme of purification and cleansing in the Bible, as seen in Ezekiel 36:25, where God promises to sprinkle clean water on his people to cleanse them from uncleanness, and in Hebrews 9:13-14, where the blood of Christ is seen as the ultimate purifying agent.
