Numbers 26:38 Summary

Numbers 26:38 lists the descendants of Benjamin by their clans, including the Belaite, Ashbelite, and Ahiramite clans. This verse shows us the importance of family and community in the Bible, just like we see in Genesis 12:1-3 where God makes a promise to Abraham. It also reminds us that God is faithful to His promises, just as He was to the Israelites as they prepared to enter the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 1:8). As we reflect on this verse, we can think about how we can trust in God's promises and care for our own families and communities, just like the Israelites did.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it important to list the descendants of Benjamin by their clans?

The listing of the descendants of Benjamin by their clans, as seen in Numbers 26:38, emphasizes the importance of family and community in the biblical narrative, as also highlighted in Genesis 12:1-3 where God promises to make Abraham the father of a great nation.

What can we learn from the names of the clans in Numbers 26:38?

The names of the clans, such as the Belaite clan from Bela, the Ashbelite clan from Ashbel, and the Ahiramite clan from Ahiram, demonstrate the significance of naming and identity in biblical culture, similar to the way God renames Abram to Abraham in Genesis 17:5.

How does the listing of the descendants of Benjamin relate to the broader context of Numbers 26?

The listing of the descendants of Benjamin in Numbers 26:38 is part of a larger census of the Israelites, as commanded by God in Numbers 26:1-4, which serves to organize and prepare the people for their entrance into the Promised Land, as promised in Deuteronomy 1:8.

What does the mention of Benjamin's descendants reveal about God's plan for the Israelites?

The mention of Benjamin's descendants in Numbers 26:38 highlights God's faithfulness to His promises, as Benjamin was the youngest son of Jacob and his tribe played a significant role in the history of Israel, as seen in the story of Joseph in Genesis 37:1-36 and the blessing of Jacob in Genesis 49:1-28.

Reflection Questions

  1. What does the emphasis on family and community in Numbers 26:38 teach us about our own relationships and responsibilities within our families and churches?
  2. How can we apply the biblical principle of naming and identity, as seen in the clans of Benjamin, to our own understanding of who we are in Christ, as described in 2 Corinthians 5:17?
  3. What role does faithfulness and trust in God's promises play in our own lives, as we reflect on the story of Benjamin and his descendants in Numbers 26:38?
  4. In what ways can we, like the Israelites, prepare ourselves for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, as we look to the example of the census in Numbers 26:1-51 and the encouragement of Joshua 1:9?

Cambridge Bible on Numbers 26:38

5–51. The twelve secular tribes are numbered, the sacred tribe of Levi being omitted. The names are based upon Genesis 46:8-27, but with the addition of Ephraim and Manasseh, who, having been born in Egypt, could not be reckoned in Gen. among those who went down into Egypt. The total number at the first census, thirty-eight years before (ch. 1) was 603,550; now it Isaiah 601,730. The order of the tribes is the same, except that Manasseh (Numbers 26:29-34) precedes Ephraim (Numbers 26:35-37). Reuben, Simeon, Gad, Ephraim and Naphtali have decreased in numbers, while the other seven have increased. The impossibility of the figures is shewn in note on Numbers 1:46.

Whedon's Commentary on Numbers 26:38

38. The sons of Benjamin established five families, and the grandsons established two. Ahiram is abbreviated to Ehi in Genesis 46:21.
