God: Father
God: Father When God Is Our Father
A missionary was teaching a Hindu woman the Lord's Prayer. When he got to the end of the first clause, "Our Father which art in heaven," she stopped him. "If God is our Father," she said, "that is enough. There is nothing now to fear."
All questioning about God ceases when He becomes our Father.
Father Is There
Many years ago a little boy lay on his small bed, having just retired for the night. Before going to sleep, he moved in the direction of the large bed on which his father lay, and said, "Father, are you there?" "Yes, my son," was the answer. The little boy turned over and went to sleep, without a thought of harm.
Tonight the little boy is an old man of seventy, and every night before going to sleep, he looks up into the face of the heavenly Father, and says, "Father, are you there?" And the answer comes back, clear and strong, "Yes, my son."
God's Correction of Us
"Happy is the man whom God correcteth" (Job 5:17).
Happy, because the correction is designed to bring him into paths of blessedness and peace.
Happy, because there is no unnecessary severity in it.
Happy, because the chastisement is not so much against us, as against our most cruel enemies-our sins.
Happy, because we have abundant words of consolation.
Happy, because whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth.
Happy, because our light affliction is but for a moment.
Why Dad Slept in the Attic
A minister's son was caught skipping school for three days. His father reprimanded him and prayed for him and though the boy wept and was truly contrite, he was still punished.
"Son, one of the facts of life is that where there is sin, there is suffering," the father said.
"You have been living a lie for three days, so for 72 hours I am banning you to the attic, with a bed and three meals a day, but you must stay up there and make amends," he charged.
The boy did as he was told. When supper was served, the minister prayed with his wife, but he was restless and could not eat. When it was time to go to bed he knew he would have no rest.
"Honey, I am going upstairs to sleep with our boy," he told his wife.
He found his son wide awake and he hugged him and lay down beside him. Each night, the father took the place of punishment with his child.
How like our own God, who despite our transgressions loves us enough to send His Son to be with us, and to die for us.
Seeing and Believing
A blind girl, whose eyes had been opened by a surgical operation, delighted in the sight of her father who had a noble appearance and presence. His every look and motion were watched by his daughter with the keenest delight. For the first time his constant tenderness and care seemed real to her. If he caressed her or even looked upon her kindly, it brought tears of gladness to her eyes. "To think," she said, holding his hand closely in her own, "that I have had you for a father all these years, and never really knew you.
Father Revealed by His Son
Let's suppose an artist sent you a picture of himself that he had painted. The picture would tell you something about him, give you a glimpse of his knowledge and ability. However, if he sent you a long descriptive letter explaining his innermost thoughts and feelings, you would begin to feel you really knew him. And finally, if he decided to send to you his son who possessed the same features as he and was like him in ability and character, this would reveal the father to you much better. "The only begotten son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him" (John 1:18).
