A Covenant of Salt

(Numbers 18:19) "It is a covenant of salt forever before the Lord unto thee and to thy seed with thee." This act of eating another’s salt has always been regarded as a token of fidelity and friendship. Sometimes bread and salt are eaten together, making a covenant. "There is bread and salt between us, we are brothers." The custom came down from the remotest antiquity. The covenant can never be forgotten nor renounced.
