The Apostolic Tradition (Easton translation)
Burton Scott Easton, The Apostolic Tradition of Hippolytus (Cambridge University Press, 1934), as transcribed for Project Gutenberg (ebook 61614, by Stephen Hutcheson and the Online Distributed Proofreading Team). Only the translation proper (Easton’s pages 33–62) is given here, with his own section numbers and his square brackets; his introduction, his notes, the lists of biblical and patristic references and the indexes are left out. SermonIndex removed the page numbers and the footnote numbers, took out the letters (LAT, GRE, SAH, TEST, ETH) that show which ancient version each stretch rests on, and gave each section a short heading of its own; the few notes of Easton’s that are printed inside the translation itself are kept and marked as his. The wording is Easton’s own. The text. The work reached us only in translation: the Latin of the Verona palimpsest (about AD 500), the Sahidic, Arabic and Ethiopic versions, and reworkings in the Apostolic Constitutions (book 8), the Epitome and the Testament of Our Lord . Easton’s own judgement was that it is the Apostolic Tradition of Hippolytus, a Roman presbyter and rival bishop, written about 215; many scholars now treat it as a composite, living church order from the third and fourth centuries and are unsure that it comes from Rome. Licence. Easton’s translation was published in 1934. Project Gutenberg distributes it as public domain in the United States, and it is given on that basis; the copyright rules of other countries may differ. Licence: Public domain (United States).
