HEN the Lord turned back the captivity of his people, then did Jacob rejoice, and Israel was glad. Verse. The foolish body hath said in his heart, There is no God.
The Lection from Proverbs. Chap. IX. 12'Äî19.
Y son, if thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thine own self, but if thou turnest out evil, thou alone shalt bear the evil. He that receiveth instruction is wise, but to the froward becometh the place of a servant. He that resteth upon lies tendeth the wind, yea, he pursueth a winged bird. For he quitteth the paths of his own vineyard, and roameth in the confines of his own husbandry. He goeth in a way void of water, and through a land given up unto thirst, and he gathereth fruit-lessness with his hands. A woman that is foolish and bold becometh scanty of bread, or otherwise she knoweth not shame. She sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat that is open to the streets, and calleth to them that pass by, to them that go right on their ways, Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither unto me. understanding she calleth and saith, Taste ye the secret bread of pleasure, and drink ye the sweet stolen water. But he knoweth not that the children of earth perish by her, and that he will encounter the snares of hades. But turn thou from her, loiter not near her place, neither cast thine eyes upon her. For by so doing thou wouldest come unto strange water; but from strange water refrain thyself, neither drink thou out of strange fountains, that thou mayest live long time, and that years of life may be added unto thee.]
And after the First Lection the Priest exclaimeth,
Wisdom! Stand up! The Light of Christ appeareth unto all.
At the conclusion of the Lections, the Reader, or other appointed person, standing in the middle of the Church, singeth,
ET my prayer be set forth before thee as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
During the singing of this verse the Choir on both sides and all the People kneel. When the Reader hath sung it, he kneeleth, and the Choir and People on the right stand up and repeat the same. And, having done
