Inspiration and Interpretation: A Review of Seven Sermons Preached Before the University of Oxford by John William Burgon

Augustus Clissold

Seven separately issued parts, Nos. I–VII, bound as one volume. Clissold opens with a review of the seven sermons on inspiration preached before the University of Oxford by John William Burgon in 1861, then argues his own account of how Scripture is to be interpreted. Clissold was a Swedenborgian, and the later parts rest on Swedenborg’s doctrine of correspondences; the volume is offered here for its historical interest in the controversy that followed Essays and Reviews, not as an endorsement of its position.
