Worldly Amusements — Rules of Action To one who urged Mr. Payson to go into society and frequent public amusements, he wrote: " Can a man walk on pitch and his feet not be defiled ? Can a man take coals of fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?" In regard to worldly associations and amusements, Payson adopted the following simple rules :
I. To do nothing the lawfulness of which he doubted in any degree.
2. To consider everything unlawful which indisposes for prayer and interrupts communion with God.
3. Never to go into any company, business, or situation, in which he could not consistently ask and expect the divine blessing. By the help of these rules, he says, " I settle all my doubts in a trice."
