25. O GOD, our help in ages past, O GOD, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home.

Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same.

Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure Sufficient is Thine arm alone, And our defence is sure.

O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be Thou our guard while life shall last, And our eternal home.

Isaac Watts ALAS! and did my Saviour bleed? And did my Sovereign die? Would He devote that sacred head For such a worm as I?

2 Was it for crimes that I have done He groaned upon the tree?

Amazing pity! grace unknown! And love beyond degree!

3 Well might the sun in darkness hide, And shut his glories in, When the incarnate Maker died For man, His creature’s sin.

4 Thus might I hide my blushing face, While His dear Cross appears;

Dissolve my heart in thankfulness, And melt my eyes to tears.

Isaac Watts
