Atonement-3-ABOUT THE ELECTRONIC EDITION
ABOUT THE ELECTRONIC EDITION
Barton W. Stone’s Atonement: The Substance of Two Letters Written to a Friend (Lexington, KY: Joseph Charless, 1805) has been transcribed from a microfilm copy of the book kindly lent by Abilene Christian University’s Center for Restoration Studies. Thanks to Dr. Hans Rollmann for providing the photocopies. Modernization completed by Ernie Stefanik, 1997. This modernized edition of Stone’s Atonement differs from the first edition in the follow particulars:
(1) Words rendered in both American and British spellings in the printed text (for example, "neighbor" and "neighbour," "honor" and "honour") have been standardized with American English spellings.
(2) Orthographical and/or typographical errors have been corrected.
(3) Abbreviations of words in headings have been eschewed.
(4) Capitalization has been normalized following modern conventions of American English (for instance, the words "Christian," "Bible," "Scripture," and "New Testament" are so capitalized throughout).
(5) Scripture references follow the current practices for such citations (namely, using a colon to separate chapter and verse and semicolon references). Standard abbreviations of Bible book name are employed throughout. These citations are generally enclosed within parentheses and follow the quotation. In eighteen instances, where the citation in the printed text precedes the quotation, the Scripture reference has been moved to follow the quotation in the electronic version; these are indicated by an asterisk in the critical apparatus. Some corrections have been offered in Scripture citations, but not all have been rigorously checked for accuracy.
(6) Interpolations within quotations have been enclosed within brackets rather than parentheses, as in the printed text.
(7) In the printed text, the letter "f" substitutes for the "long s" commonly employed in pre-nineteenth century printing; in the electronic version, the letter "s" replaces all such uses of the letter "f."
(8) In this edition headings have been set in larger type and subheadings in italic type. Numbers of subsections have been enclosed within parentheses.
(9)Changes in punctuation have been made only absolutely necessary, and then for the sake of consistency. For example, in the printed text either quotation marks or italics specify quotations from Scripture; in the electronic version, quotation marks have been used for this purpose, and quotations in italic type have been rendered in roman type. Where dashes have been used as separators in the printed text, commas or semicolons have been substituted in the electronic version. Where end punctuation is missing in the printed text, it has been supplied in this edition. In general, rules and conventions of American English have been followed. The types of alterations delineated above are intended only to make this work more accessible to the reader. Every effort has been made to preserve the words and thoughts of the author.
Other formatting changes have been made to give the book a more up-to-date look, including bold font (all of which was added in 2013). This version of Stone’s Atonement is made available in pdf and e-Sword formats through www.GravelHillchurchofChrist.com
