07.14. The Deity of Christ in Revelation
The Deity of Christ in Revelation There are several passages that make it clear that Jesus is indeed God. In Rev 1:4, “the one who is, and who was and who is to come” is a reference to God the Father. In Rev 1:8, God the Father says that He is the “Alpha and Omega” and the one “who is and was and who is to come, the Almighty”. In this verse, Alpha and Omega and the one who is and was and is to come are equated with God. In Rev 1:17-18, Jesus references his identity again by stating that He is the “first and the last”, that He is the “living one who was dead and now is alive forever and ever”. As has already been established, Jesus is the one that Judges and sits on the throne at the great white throne judgment. In the scene in Rev 21:1-7, the new heaven and earth appear. The one sitting on the throne spoke. One of the things said is “I am the Alpha and Omega”. The question is who is on this throne? Is it Jesus, who was on the great white throne just prior or is it God the father from Rev 4:2? The most natural reading would be that this is God the Father on the throne. In Rev 22:13-16, Jesus is speaking and says that I am the “Alpha and Omega, the first and the last”. Here, Jesus proclaims that He is the Alpha and Omega, which previously has been used by God the father to describe Himself. Thus, the only valid conclusion is that both God the Father and Jesus, God the Son is God. Additionally, of course, the Holy Spirit is also identified as God, therefore we have a “triune” God – one God in three persons.
