Jeremiah 26:1

D. Jeremiah’s Warning to the People (Chap. 26)26:1-11 Jeremiah is told to stand in the temple court, warning the people that if they do not repent, the Lord will forsake the temple as He did Shiloh. (Note that the conditional promises of God are subject to relenting on God’s part if man does not meet the conditions [v. 3]. God can never relent concerning His unconditional promises.) The priests and false prophets and the people became incensed and threatened the prophet. 26:12-19 Fearlessly Jeremiah repeats his message. Then the princes and all the people defend him, and the elders remind the crowd that Micah had prophesied boldly in the days of a good king and had not been put to death. 26:20-24 These verses may be an argument presented by the opposition or they may simply be the record of the fact that Jehoiakim ordered the execution of a prophet named Urijah who prophesied the same things as Jeremiah. However, Ahikam the son of Shaphan prevails to deliver Jeremiah from death.
