Psalms 117

BSASB

This is the shortest chapter in the Bible, only two verses. It calls every nation on earth to praise the LORD. The reason given is His steadfast love toward His people and His truth that never fails.

Psalms 117:1

The psalm opens with a call that reaches far beyond Israel. All nations and all peoples are told to praise the LORD. He is not only Israel’s God. He is worthy of worship from every people on earth.

BSA: nations (“Gentiles, non-Hebrew peoples”): The call goes directly to those outside Israel, showing God’s heart for the whole world. Extol (“praise, glorify”): This is more than a polite nod; it means lifting Him high in speech and song.

Hebrew: שַׁבְּחוּהוּ (shabbechuhu, H7623) — “commend Him, speak well of Him, praise Him.” This is an Aramaic-flavored word for praise, rare in Hebrew. It is used here for the nations, which fits a call that reaches beyond Israel’s own borders.

Psalms 117:2

The reason for praise is who God is toward His people. His loving devotion is great, and His faithfulness never ends. What He promised, He keeps. The psalm closes with Hallelujah, a shout of praise to the LORD.

BSA: loving devotion (“merciful kindness, faithful love”): This is love that holds to a promise, not a passing feeling. faithfulness (“truth, stability”): God is reliable and firm. His word can be leaned on. endures (“lasts, remains”): His goodness does not wear out or fade with time.

Hebrew: חַסְדּוֹ (chasdo, H2617) — “His covenant love, steadfast kindness.” This word describes love that stays loyal to a promise. It is the love of a God who binds Himself to His people and does not let go.
