The Holy Bible with Notes Explanatory and Practical (D'Oyly & Mant)
George D'Oyly (1778-1846), Rector of Lambeth, and Richard Mant (1776-1848), Bishop of Down and Connor, compiled this annotated Bible for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, and for most of the nineteenth century it was the standard family and parish Bible of the Church of England. Rather than write afresh they gathered the best notes of the earlier Anglican divines - Patrick, Lowth, Whitby, Hammond, Shuckford and Wells among them - into a single continuous commentary on the whole Bible, each note signed with the name of the writer it came from.
