The Dutch Annotations
The annotations on the whole Bible ordered by the Synod of Dort in 1618, published in Dutch in 1637 and translated into English by Theodore Haak in 1657. Haak set the notes directly beside the phrases they explain, so the comment reads alongside the text rather than after it. Spurgeon judged them too brief to be of great value — “committees seldom equal the labors of individuals” — while Joel Beeke has argued they deserved far better than that verdict.
