Exodus 17
Evans, W.Exodus 17:1-16
Exodus 17:1-16 The Stricken Rock (Exodus 17:1-16) Here we have the third murmuring since the people left Egypt. Although they had just witnessed the almighty power of God in supplying them with bread, yet they grumbled because they had no water, grumbled really because they had lost their faith in God. The smitten rock is a type of Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4); the water, a type of the Spirit (cf. John 7:37-39); Amalek (Exodus 17:8) is a type of the flesh (cf. Galatians 5:17); Joshua (Joshua 17:10-14) is a type of Christ who gives us victory over the flesh (cf. Hebrews 4:8, R.V.).
