A Plain and Familiar Explication of the Hard Texts of Scripture
Joseph Hall (1574-1656) was Bishop of Exeter and then of Norwich, and one of the most widely read devotional writers of the English church - Thomas Fuller called him 'our English Seneca'. This work takes the passages of Scripture that ordinary readers find hardest and renders each as a plain paraphrase, expanding the sense in the simplest English Hall could manage rather than arguing with other commentators. It was written for families reading the Bible together, and first appeared in 1633. This is the 1838 Oxford edition of his collected Works. Public domain.
