A Paraphrase and Annotations upon the New Testament
Henry Hammond (1605-1660) was Archdeacon of Chichester and chaplain to Charles I, and is often called the father of English biblical criticism. The Paraphrase and Annotations, first published in 1653, sets his paraphrase beside the text and adds annotations that weigh the Greek, the Fathers and the history of interpretation. It was the standard Anglican New Testament commentary of its age and Doddridge, Wesley and Clarke all quote it. This is the 1845 Oxford edition. Public domain.
