1 Samuel 18

1. Jonathan loved him. Jonathan’s friendship for David began with admiration of his faith and courage in this great exploit, and evidently resulted from that spirit of patriotic piety which they both strikingly displayed.

4. And Jonathan stripped himself, etc. Ancient poets represent their heroes as exchanging armour, in token of friendship; and, in Eastern countries, a prince can scarcely bestow a greater mark of his favour than by the gift of some article of his dress, especially if he has already worn it.

10 prophesied. This word signifies being in a highly excited state, or frenzy: “raved” (R.V. marg.).

21 in [the one of] the twain. Or, “a second time” (R.V.); see Job xxxiii. 14. The first engagement, connected with the slaying of Goliath, had not taken effect; Saul makes a second, on the condition mentioned in ver. 25.

26 the days were not expired. Within which David was to fulfil the condition.
