2. Beeroth. Beeroth originally belonged to the Gibeonites, and they had been allowed to remain there after this district, at the general partition of the country, was allotted to the tribe of Benjamin: see Josh. ix. 17, 18; xviii. 25.

4 lame of his feet. Which, according to Eastern notions, would exclude Mephibosheth from succeeding to the throne.

6 wheat. The Greek version of this obscure passage is: “And, behold! the doorkeeper of his house was cleaning wheat; and she was drowsy and fell asleep. And Rechab and Baanah, the brothers, escaped notice, and went into the house,” etc.

7 the plain. “The Arabah” (R.V.): see note on ii. 29.

10 who thought that I would have given him, etc. “Which was the reward that I gave him” (R.V.).
