Exodus 17
Irwin6. I will stand. Probably manifesting Himself in the pillar of cloud.
9. Amalek. The tribes of the Amalekites appear to have wandered through the Desert of Paran (now called Et-Tih), which occupied the tableland between Horob and Palestine. Deut. xxv. 17, 18, shows that this attack was marked by peculiar craftiness and cruelty. Their hostility was lasting (Judges iii. 13; vi. 33; vii. 12; 1 Sam. xv.; xxx.).
9 the rod of God. Moses, as commander of the host of Israel, not only watches the fight, but lifts up the wonder-working rod in sight of the people, bringing down help from on high (Psa. cxli. 2), and assuring them of victory, as fighting under the banner of Jehovah. See ver. 15.
