4 thou shalt go forth at even. By secret flight: see 2 Kings xxv. 4. The flight of Zedekiah was thus graphically foretold among the exiles by the Chebar.
6 in the twilight. Rather, “in the dark,” as R.V.
13 yet shall he not see it. Zedekiah being blinded by order of Nebuchadrezzar: see 2 Kings xxv. 7, and note.
16 that they may declare all their abominations. i.e., that they may confess what their sins have been.
18 eat thy bread, etc. Another sign; the prophet thus dramatically picturing the fear of the approaching siege.
19 the people of the land. The Jewish exiles in Chaldea.
22. The days are prolonged, and every vision falleth. Time passes on, and these prophecies of evil are not fulfilled.
23 the effect of every vision. That is, the fulfilment of every vision.
27 he prophesieth of the times that are far off. The same spirit of unbelief still produces the same false security; and is declared in the New Testament to be one characteristic of “the last times” (Matt. xxiv. 38, 39; 2 Pet. iii. 3-10).
