4 burned. Rather, “scorched.” Is it (the scorched part that remains) fit for any work? The allusion is to the impoverished and reduced state of the covenant-people.

7 they shall go out from [one] fire, and [another] fire shall devour them. Rather, as R.V., “they shall go forth from the fire, but the fire shall devour them.” The brand plucked from the burning shall itself be consumed!
