3. Ye mountains of Israel. The mountains and hills are first addressed, probably as being the scenes of idolatry: ep. vers. 3, 4, with 1 Kings xii. 31, etc. So with the “rivers”; rather ravines or wadys, also often polluted by idolatry: see Isa. lvii. 5, 6.

4. I will cast down your slain men before your idols. That all might see what was the sin which had caused the ruin of the people, and how helpless were the gods in whom they had trusted. The “images” are sun-images (R.V.).

9. Because I am broken, etc. Rather, “Because I have broken their wanton heart that departeth from Me, and their eyes,” etc.: see R.V. marg.

11. Smite with thine hand. Expressing grief and indignation.
