6 earing. An old English word signifying ploughing. It occurs in A.V.: Exod. xxxiv. 21; Deut. xxi. 4; 1 Sam. viii. 12; Isa. xxx. 4.
8. God. Literally, “the God,” i.e., the God of our family. Joseph’s thoughts are fixed on the workings of Divine providence.—father. That is, “counsellor,” or “guardian”; as in Judges xvii. 10.
10. Goshen. Near the north-east frontier of Egypt, which they might protect from irruption: whilst they would have room for the pasture of their numerous cattle and sheep near to Canaan, the destined home of the chosen race.—near unto me. Zoan, a royal residence, was near Goshen.
19 do ye. Pharaoh empowers Joseph to invite his family to settle in Egypt with the royal sanction, which made their subsequent oppression the more inexcusable.
20 stuff. Such property as they could not conveniently carry away.
24 fall not out. He may have feared that mutual reproaches might produce a quarrel.
