1 in the night. Rather, “in a night,” as R.V.

2. He. That is, the people.

Bajith. “The house,” i.e., the temple of Chemosh, their god (comp. xvi. 12; Numb. xxii. 41).

4. His life shall be grievous unto him. Or, “His soul trembleth within him” (R.V.).

7 shall they carry away. That is, the Moabites. The “brook” is one of those flowing into the Dead Sea, probably Wady-d-Achsa, the boundary between Moab and Idumæa, “the brook Zered” of Deut. ii. 13. The Moabites, as their last resource, carry their possessions across the Willowbrook to the land of Idumæa.

8. Beer-elim. Perhaps, “the well of the mighty ones” (Numb. xxi. 18). Eglaim and Beer-elim were at opposite extremities of Moab. The cry of wailing passes through the whole land.

Dimon. Probably the same as Dibon, ver. 2. Here the “Moabite Stone” was found in 1868.

lions. Heb., “a lion”; a symbol of a mighty and cruel foe.
