Jeremiah 19

1 the ancients. i.e., “the elders” (R.V.).

2 the east gate. More probably, “the potterygate”: “the gate Harsith,” R.V., not mentioned by that name elsewhere. Nehemiah (iii. 14, 15) mentions two gates leading from the city to the Valley of Hinnom. This may have been one of them, or a postern used for casting out refuse.

4 have estranged this place. i.e., have alienated it to the worship of idols.

7. I will make void. Emphatic in Heb., “I will empty out.”

8 desolate. Rather, “an astonishment,” as xviii. 16.

9 to eat the flesh. A repetition of the threatening in Deut. xxviii. 53, which was fulfilled speedily (see Lam. iv. 10), and repeatedly, as appears from Josephus’s account of the siege of Jerusalem by Titus. See Ware, vi. 3, § 8.

13 upon whose roofs, etc. See 2 Kings xxiii. 12.
