Jeremiah 33

2 the Maker thereof. “Who made the earth” (Moffatt). The Eternal here pledges that unchanging faithfulness which His name implies (see note on Exod. vi. 3) for the fulfilment of His promises.

3 mighty. Rather, “inaccessible”; “des choses grandes et cachées” (“great and hidden things”) (French version).

4 which are thrown down by the mounts, etc. Rather, as R.V., “which are broken down [to make a defence] against the mounts and against the sword.”

5. They come to fight with the Chaldeans, etc. “The Chaldeans are come to fight and to fill them (i.e., the houses) with the corpses of the men, whom I have slain,” etc.

9. And it shall be to Me, etc. i.e., the city, Jerusalem, shall be, etc.: see R.V.

11. Praise the Lord of hosts, etc. A formula of praise: see Psa. cxxxvi.

13 telleth. “Counteth.” Cp. Milton, L’Allegro, “Every shepherd tells this tale.”

16. The Lord our Righteousness. i.e., descriptively, and supplying the substantive verb, “Jehovah [is] our Righteousness.” The city is thus honoured with a title derived from her Divine King: see xxiii. 6.

24 this people. The people of Jerusalem in their despondency.

The two families, etc. Meaning, perhaps, the two kingdoms of Israel and Judah.

25. If My covenant [be] not with day and night. Rather, as R.V., “If My covenant with day and night [stand] not.” The invariableness of natural phenomena should sustain our faith in the promises of God.
