Jeremiah 42

1. Jezaniah. Called Azariah, xliii. 2. There was another Jezaniah, xl. 8.

6. Whether it be good, or whether it be evil. Whether it be pleasing to us or not.

12. I will show mercies unto you. Or, as R.V., “I will grant you mercy.” Nebuchadrezzar’s mercy—a gift from God.

cause you to return to your own land. Rather, “to dwell, or remain in.” They were already in the land.

16 the sword which ye feared. . . . Egypt, etc. These denunciations were fulfilled when Egypt was invaded by the Chaldeans.

19. The Lord hath said, etc. Hitherto God had spoken (ver. 15), now the prophet himself speaks.

that I have admonished you. More precisely, as R.V., “that I have testified unto you.”

20 ye dissembled in your hearts. Or, “ye have done evil against your own souls”; i.e., to your ruin.
