5 seekest thou great things, etc. In the midst of such terrible calamities, do not seek for any special prominence, as a deliverer or a prophet. Be content that your life is secured to you. Baruch, who was of distinguished family, his grandfather Masseiah having been governor of Jerusalem in the time of Josiah (2 Chron. xxxiv. 8), might have expected to play some important part in the present crisis: his ambition, however, is repressed, and he is hidden patiently to endure. It is a counsel of general and modern application.
