3. For Moses had given.** Rather, “And Moses,” etc. Vers. 3, 4 explain how it was that nine tribes and a half were to be provided for. Levi was to have no portion, but Joseph was to have two—a portion as of the firstborn.

6. Caleb.** Before the land was divided, Caleb’s special claim was satisfied. Note the simple trust in God that breathes in his address (vers. 10, 12), and the heroism that takes up the difficult task (ver. 12: “Give me this mountain”).

14 because that he wholly followed the Lord. God endorsed Caleb’s testimony regarding himself, “My servant Caleb hath followed Me fully” (Numb. xiv. 24).
