1 the lot of the children of Joseph. The descendants of Joseph drew one lot, in order, it would seem, that the half tribe of Manasseh and the tribe of Ephraim might not be separated.

the water of Jericho. This is the brook which takes its rise at the fountain Ain es Sultan, northwest of Riha, and flows into the Jordan. It is probably the “spring” which was healed by Elisha: see 2 Kings ii. 21.

9 the separate cities. Ver. 9 should be connected with ver. 8, as it completes the description of Ephraim’s inheritance, thus: “And (in addition) the cities which were separated for the children of Ephraim from the midst of the inheritance of the children of Manasseh.” See xvii. 9, and note.
