I preached the gospel. “Proclaiming the good news.” A phrase characteristic of Luke, used only by one other evangelist, Matt. xi. 5.

6 will stone us. The rulers had been accustomed to encourage such acts of violence on the part of the people, for their own purposes: and now they fear the weapon they have used.

36 equal unto the angels. Like them in the enjoyment of immortality; and therefore not needing marriage, which is the means of replacing those whom death destroys.

children of the resurrection. Having obtained the full benefit of their adoption, in the deliverance of body as well as soul from the effects of sin: see Rom. viii. 23; Eph. i. 14.

38 for all live unto Him. Peculiar to Luke. The meaning is that in relation to Him those who are dead to us are still alive.

39,40. A summary of the beginning and end of Mark xii. 28-34.

40 durst not ask Him any [question at all]. The question as to the great commandment of the Law (Matt. xxii. 36; Mark xii. 28) was asked at this time, but Luke, who had given its substance on a former occasion (x. 25-28), does not here repeat it.
