I much people. Rather, “a great multitude” (as in ver. 6) of both saints and angels.

Alleluia. In Hebrew, “Hallelujah”; i.e., Praise ye the Lord!

3 rose up. Rather, “riseth up”; always and for ever: see xiv. 11; and note on Jude 7.

8 for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. “The righteousness” of the saints, symbolised by “fine linen,” are “the fruits of righteousness”: see Phil. i. 11.

9 the marriage supper. The blessed time when the Church shall be publicly avowed by her Lord, and admitted to share His heavenly glory: cp. Matt. xxv. 1-12.

11 a white horse. Cp. Zech. i. 8-11; vi. 1-7, and notes. See also vi. 2; where a crowned conqueror was beginning his victories; here the Incarnate Word is about to complete His triumphs, and to establish His universal kingdom.

Faithful and True. See i. 5; iii. 14.

12 many crowns. Or, many “diadems”; an emblem of universal dominion: see ver. 16.

a name. Cp. ii. 17, and note.

13 vesture dipped in blood. Cp. Isa. lxiii. 1-3, and notes.

The Word of God. Cp. John i. 1, and notes.

15. And out of His mouth, etc. Cp. i. 16, and note.

a rod of iron. Cp. Psa. ii. 9, and note.

17. Come [and] gather yourselves together, etc. Cp. Jer. vii. 33; Ezek. xxxix. 17-20. This imagery denotes the certainty and the completeness of the anticipated victory.

the supper of the great God. The best MSS. have “the great supper of God”; so the Vulgate and the French version.

20 a (the) lake of fire, etc. A description probably founded on the punishment of Sodom: see Gen. xix. 24-28; Psa. xi. 6; and cp. Isa. xxx. 3; xxxiv. 9; Dan. vii. 11.
