14 vinegar. A weak acid wine, much used by labourers in vine-growing countries, and both cheap and refreshing. Here it is used for the sharp sauce in which the food was dipped. See John xiii. 26.

parched corn. “The grains of wheat not yet fully dry and hard, roasted in a pan or on an iron plate, and eaten with the bread, or instead of it."—Robinson.

and left. i.e., “and left thereof.” R.V.

17 an ephah. Nearly a bushel.

20 one of our next kinsmen. Or, “one that hath a right to redeem” the goël. See Lev. xxv. 25.
