3 not false accusers, etc. Rather, “not slanders, not enslaved to much wine”: see i. 12.

4 that they may teach the young women, etc. Rather, “that they train the young women to love their husbands,” etc.

5 keepers at home. The best authorities read “workers at home”: a phrase for good housewives.

9 [Exhort] servants to be obedient. See on 1 Tim. vi. 1, 2.

not answering again. “Incessantly objecting to what is said to them, and setting up their own will in opposition to that of their masters” (Lange).

11 the grace of God that bringeth salvation, etc. Or, “the grace of God was manifested (i.e., in Christ’s coming), bringing salvation to all men, instructing us, to the intent that,” etc.

12 soberly, righteously, and godly. True morality concerns ourselves (“soberly”), our fellow-men (“righteously”), and God (“godly”).

13 that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing. Rather, “the blessed hope and appearing of the glory.”

of the great God, etc. Or, “of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ.”

14 that He might redeem us from all iniquity, etc. His purpose in redeeming us “from the curse of the law,” was to redeem us also “from all lawlessness, and to purify unto Himself a people for His own possession,” etc.: cp. Exod. xix. 5, and 1 Pet. ii. 9.

15. Let no man despise thee. See 1 Tim. iv. 12, and note.
