Friedrich Justus Knecht (1839-1921) was Auxiliary Bishop of Freiburg and one of the most widely translated Catholic catechists of his day. A Practical Commentary on Holy Scripture was written for those who teach Bible history: it takes the scriptural narratives in order and, for each, sets out the explanation, the doctrine it carries and the application to be drawn from it. Because it follows the narrative rather than the verse, it is a different kind of book from a verse-by-verse commentary, and a valuable Catholic voice alongside the Protestant weight of the rest of the collection.
