Patrick and Lowth on the Old Testament
Symon Patrick (1626-1707), Bishop of Ely, wrote his commentary on the historical and poetical books over twenty years, and William Lowth (1660-1732) completed the Old Testament with the prophets. Patrick opens the text phrase by phrase, quoting the words of Scripture and then explaining them out of the Hebrew, the rabbis and the fathers; on Job and the Psalms he gives a full paraphrase instead. It was the standard English commentary of its age and stands behind much later work. This is the Old Testament only, from the 1822 Pitman edition. Public domain.
