The Self-Interpreting Bible
John Brown of Haddington (1722-1787) was a self-taught shepherd boy who became professor of divinity to the Associate Synod, and his Self-Interpreting Bible, first published in 1778, was for a century the family Bible of Scottish and American homes. Each chapter carries two things: explanatory notes that open the sense of the text verse by verse, and a paragraph of reflections that presses it on the conscience — the Scripture made to interpret itself, and then to search the reader.
